I admit it. I shop at Wal-Mart. I shop there because it saves me two precious resources — money and time. Where else can I buy a gallon of paint, a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, shampoo and an ink cartridge for my printer all in one place at a reasonable price? That’s the only way I can afford to feed three kids, a husband, a nephew, an exchange student and two dogs.
A recent survey reveals that “Wal-Mart moms,” described as women with children under age 18, make up a whopping16 percent of the electorate. That does not bode well for Democrats in November because Wal-Mart moms are enduring a lot of economic pain right now.
Wal-Mart moms are feeling “economically squeezed” and their vote is “up for grabs” this November. While most voted for President Obama in 2008, their pessimism about their personal finances has them leaning towards Republicans in 2010.
Wal-Mart moms are interesting politically. They tend to lean toward democrats, are more moderate (46 percent) than conservative (34 percent) and even less liberal (20 percent) in their political views. They support everything from gun rights to gay rights to conservative religious groups. They approve of both government intervention and the Tea Party movement.
But it’s the economy that weighs heavy on their minds and their lives right now. Weekly Standard Executive Editor Fred Barns noted, that “half of Wal-Mart moms are concerned about falling into a lower economic class. They are anxious about joblessness.” Sixty-one percent say the economic downturn has personally affected them. Right now, these moms are doing whatever is necessary just to make ends meet including skipping trips to the doctor, buying less expensive birthday and holiday gifts, putting off home and car repairs, and spending less overall.
In total 73 percent had a pessimistic outlook.
Furthermore, more than 40 percent say the bad economy is negatively affecting their marriages or relationships with partners and two-thirds are unhappy financially.
There is more bad news for the Democrats. Wal-Mart moms dislike the Obamacare, the recently enacted landmark health care bill. Roughly twice as many said the legislation will make their health care worse (42 percent) than said it will make it better (22 percent). Overall 52 percent say they disapprove of the bill.
Despite all president’s cheery talk of “recovery summer,” these moms know the economy is bad. The trillion dollar health care bill won’t help them and in fact it will make their situation and their family’s situation worse. What they realize instinctively is that all this government spending, which has added to their children’s national debt, has not helped. The political cliché government spending is “for the children” rings hollow for these moms.
